1) Convection heating vs. conduction heating
The VOLCANO, the first device developed by Markus Storz, is the culmination of his inspiration for a heat gun. This model is based on a convection heating system, where hot air is used to heat herbs evenly and efficiently. In the VOLCANO, a pump blows hot air through the herbs into the Filling Chamber, ensuring even vaporization. The result? Dense, flavorful clouds that enhance the vaporizing experience.
Convection for pure steam: The VOLCANO's convection heating generates gentle, clean steam, pure in flavor. This process guarantees efficient extraction of the active ingredients without altering the taste of the herbs. This is why the VOLCANO CLASSIC remains one of the most popular references on the market today. Thanks to the Ballon on this model, the vaporization experience is even smoother and more pleasant.
Conduction/convection combination: PLENTY, MIGHTY(+) and CRAFTY(+) units combine convection and conduction heating. This hybrid system optimizes efficiency by allowing herbs to be preheated by conduction, while convection ensures more uniform extraction and more satisfactory cloud production. Unlike pure conduction heating, which does not vaporize herbs evenly, the combination of the two technologies guarantees an optimal vaporization experience.
The challenge of pure heating: With pure convection heating, it takes a few seconds before the herbs are sufficiently heated, which can result in an initial inhalation with little or no vapor. Pure conduction heating, on the other hand, often has the disadvantage of requiring the herbs to be stirred to achieve even vaporization. Storz & Bickel's patented technology solves both these problems, enabling rapid, even vaporization from the very first inhalation.
2) Suction resistance
At Storz & Bickel, we have always paid particular attention to the design of our devices to ensure smooth, pleasant inhalation. This translates into low suction resistance, an essential aspect especially for our portable devices, which offer an optimal airflow of 10 liters per minute.
Why is this important? Low suction resistance allows more air to be drawn through the device in a single inhalation, making the experience more comfortable and efficient. With high airflow, the heating system must be extremely efficient to maintain constant vapor production, while guaranteeing fast, efficient vaporization of the herbs.
A technical challenge: However, high airflow also places additional demands on power and heat management. The higher the airflow, the more responsive and powerful the heating must be. This calls for fine-tuned power management and greater efficiency in cloud cooling. This also has a direct impact on the choice of materials and the overall design of the units, which must be both compact and offer exceptional performance.

Maintenance of your Herbal Vaporizer
Regular maintenance of your vaporizer ensures a long service life and optimum vapor quality. A clean vaporizer preserves the purity of the herbs' aromas and effects, while preventing residues from building up and impairing operation.
It is advisable to clean your vaporizer after each use, or at least every 5 to 10 sessions to ensure optimum performance. A thorough cleaning, including parts such as the heating chamber and mouthpiece, should be carried out at least once a month.
- Carefully dismantle all the removable parts of your vaporizer.
- Use a fine brush to remove herb residues from the heating chamber.
- Small removable parts (such as the mouthpiece or filter) can be soaked in isopropyl alcohol for 15 to 30 minutes.
- For sensitive or electronic parts, use a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol to remove residues without damaging the device.
- Allow all parts to dry completely before reassembling and using the vaporizer again.
Use 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol to clean most non-electronic parts. For sensitive parts such as silicone mouthpieces, use lukewarm soapy water or mild cleaning solutions suitable for vaporizers.
- Grind herbs finely: Well-ground herbs vaporize more evenly, reducing residues.
- Avoid wet grass: Dry grass minimizes the build-up of sticky material in the heating chamber.
- Quick cleaning after each session: Use a small brush to quickly clean the heating chamber after each use to prevent build-up.
If the mouthpiece is blocked, remove it and clean it with isopropyl alcohol. You can also use a small brush or toothpick to remove any obstructive residue.
An altered taste is often the sign of a clogged vaporizer. A thorough cleaning of the heating chamber and mouthpiece, and replacement of the grids if necessary, should solve the problem.
- Charging correctly: Avoid letting the battery discharge completely, and recharge it before it reaches 0%.
- Storage: If you're not going to be using the vaporizer for a long time, make sure the battery is partially charged (around 40-50%) and store the device in a cool, dry place.
